This shoot was part of a photo coaching session that I did for Darren and Amanda. Amanda is a lifelong friend (25 years to be exact). So I have been able to photograph most of their milestones for them. But now with Covid and social distancing I couldn’t physically be there for them.
I had done a FaceTime shoot before this but wasn’t happy with the quality. Even so I wanted them to have some pictures to remember this special time by so I suggested doing a photo session for them. Amanda reminded me that they both have DSLR’s so she suggested me coaching Darren through taking the photos with one of their cameras. I loved this idea so we tried it out. And it worked so well! I am so happy with how these images came out. Darren did such a great job.
And this is how it worked: I video called them which they answered on their iPad. This way I could be on a big screen that Amanda could see while she was posing. They propped me up on a ladder and moved me around wherever they needed me so that I had the same view as Darren and could guide him on camera settings and composition and guide Amanda on posing at the same time.
Amanda and Darren then chose the images they liked and I edited them. I had a vision of how these photos would look and they came out looking pretty similar to what I had in mind, which is crazy to think that doing this photoshoot remotely, through another human was possible. My hope is that Darren has learnt how to use his camera better in different lighting situations and that he has learnt more about the technical side of how to deal with light and in directing his subject with posing.
I will post the image of how we did this shoot at the end of the picture section in this blog. My mind is officially blown. Necessity breeds invention they say…I can now confirm that it does.
And below is the behind the scenes of how we did this.
